Introducing Joanna Lay
The Institute of Aquaphobia
We’re honoured to highlight the important work of Joanna Lay, Director of the Institute of Aquaphobia (IOA) and founder of International Aquaphobia Awareness Day.
Joanna is making a profound impact on individuals who experience fear and anxiety around water through the Institute of Aquaphobia, which offers structured, supportive programs designed to help people gradually overcome aquaphobia and build confidence in aquatic environments. With expert guidance and a compassionate approach, the IOA empowers individuals to move at their own pace – restoring comfort, safety and trust in water.
In the UK alone, over 13 million people suffer from aquaphobia – more than twice the population of London. Of those affected, an estimated 3 million avoid everyday activities like showering or bathing due to the severity of their fear.
At FoSS, we’re proud to support initiatives that promote accessibility, inclusion and wellbeing in aquatics. By raising awareness through the IOA and International Aquaphobia Awareness Day, Joanna is helping to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to experiencing the benefits of water.
